“Issue Number One: Interview with Indie Comic Book Writer David Arroyo”

“Issue Number One” a new series dedicated to comic book conversations.
Episode 01: Writer/Illustrator David Arroyo discusses his latest indie comic venture, “The Super Cliche Hero Chick”, now available at IndyPlanet.com

As you may have heard in one of the recent podcasts, I’ve made plans to expand this website into a full-fledged network and one of the new shows would involve comic books. Comic books fascinate me, especially from a filmmaker’s perspective. You can’t visit the movie theater without having to acknowledge the connection between the two mediums. In many ways they’ve become our modern mythology by way of the summer blockbuster yet somehow manage to still retain struggling readership limited to it’s cult following. It’s an attractive mystery, how boundless imaginative stories contained to a page can both validate the art form then trivialize it and all at once be something I’ve outgrown, then returned to.

Announcing our latest show to join the scattered ranks of “Random Video” and “This Is Fastpass”…”Issue Number One” – a new series of comic book conversations. Featured in this first episode: While making good on the promise of free comic book day and waiting for a late night screening of “Avengers”, I found David Arroyo drawing Iron Man for the first time as if it had been his trillionth and wanted to learn more about him. This video is the result.

“Stoner Boner” Now available on DVD and Digital Download

I wasn’t able to properly celebrate 4/20 last month, it’s a luxury I’m no longer afforded or at least for the foreseeable future. But rather than sit idle sober and somber I found a moment to flip through my giant binder of footage. That’s where I revisited a familiar friend named “Stoner Boner” and impulsively announced a special edition DVD. This has been a long time coming but appropriately I’ve been waiting for some date that corresponds with the numbers four and twenty because that’s just obvious marketing, 5/14/2012 seemed good enough. It’s somewhat of a shame it’s taken three years to finish, at this point releasing a DVD is akin to releasing a cassette tape, there’s no sane reason to do it. Videos can be made available at every possible convenience in the highest possible quality but there is something undeniably satisfying about seeing my own film taken out of theoretical cyberspace and made tangible, sitting on the shelf in perfect uniform with the other DVDs. That’s something worth the effort to share with anyone else who feels the same. With that I give you straight from my obsessive compulsive heart, the definitive collection of “Stoner Boner” material in one complete package dedicated to an incomplete film. I should mention that unfortunately the proposed audio commentaries were not included on this release, Gabe fell asleep during the recording session.

“Stoner Boner” is the true story of Gabe Levin and the worst day of his life. This short film was shot and abandoned within four hours in March 2009 with no budget or finished script yet somehow grew to become the symbol of cinematic potential we’ve chased ever since. Presented on this definitive release is the original trailer, full length pilot episode, the 2010 special edition trailer and the feature length documentary, “The Making of Stoner Boner” proving a comprehensive look into our haphazard production process from inception to unmentioned…

This DVD is available in two formats:

Digital Download is essentially a virtual version of the hard copy DVD complete with full motion menus provided in ISO format. Watch on the computer or burn your own DVD with included cover art and disc labels. Price: $0.99

Also available are limited edition DVD copies, complete with full motion menus, cover art and disc labels. Personally autographed by director Daniel Owens and Stoner Boner himself, Gabe Levin. Price: $5.00

DVD and Digital Download are now available in the Art Mart.

Recorded April 30, 2012 Daniel and Gabe once more return from an extended hiatus to record their first radio show of the new year and tour the grounds of the lovely new Levin home, a glorious manor plagued by horses and solitude. “Random Video” is the companion series of “Random Radio” the official podcast series of randomdreamerstudios.com chronicling raw, candid discussions in the lives of a rag-tag band of misfit filmmakers and the nonsense that surrounds them.

Listen to the full length audio podcast.

Although it was a necessary evil, I wasn’t entirely comfortable with putting last week’s “Random Video” up for sale in the Art Mart so before I begin editing the next two episodes I had to reach a compromise: When a new episode goes up, the previous one will be made available for free on youtube. The running time restriction on uploads has been resolved and I’m now capable of sharing long form videos again, which is good news because the next few videos can only exist at full length. Find a comfortable chair, prepare to bring snacks.

Episode 18: Preparation, Perspiration – On the road, to the radio room and back again as Gabe plans a party for his girlfriend with the help of his surly brothers.

“Stoner Boner: the complete archive” will be available in the Art Mart Monday May 14, 2012 on DVD and Digital Download. For the past few weeks I’ve painstakingly sorted through hours of footage and collected everything worth watching into the definitive presentation of a short film we made one afternoon in 2009. Tomorrow morning I’m going up to Gabe’s house (the Levin equivalent of Skywalker Ranch) and recording an introduction and audio commentary exclusive to this release. But if none of this appeals to you or for whatever reason you just don’t feel like spending money on something you’ll eventually get on youtube for free then I have news for you: This Friday for one night only you’ll be able to catch a special sneak preview of our feature length documentary, “The Making of Stoner Boner” broadcast on randomdreamerTV in it’s entirety. If that’s not good enough, allow me to sweeten the deal with a free broadcast of last week’s “Random Video” and possibly one more surprise.

In many ways “The Making of Stoner Boner” is the prototype of “Failing Upward”. Providing an unprecedented behind the scenes look into our haphazard production, it’s the very next best thing to a time machine revisiting that singular moment. Follow the process from inception to the point where everything finally fell apart and the footage ends, shot by shot from every available source. Edited sometime in 2010, this is often regarded as one of “the lost videos” and might be considered the most special as it depicts the first time I felt like I was making a movie and knew it was a feeling I would chase for the rest of my life.

“The Making of Stoner Boner” airs Friday May 11, 2012 at 6:00pm (pst) on randomdreamerTV.
